Step 1: Evaluate your existing supports
1.1 Employer benefits
- Check your employee handbook / HR portal / contract
- Ask HR confidentially what supports exist (reimbursement, paid leave, EAP)
- If relevant: union supports or policy guidance
1.2 Health insurance
- Review your current policy for fertility benefits and limits
- Compare plans carefully (watch waiting periods if switching)
- Ask about direct pay (insurer pays clinic vs you paying and claiming)
- Use HIA.ie to compare, then confirm with insurer by phone
1.3 Drug Payment Scheme (DPS)
- Monthly household cap can significantly reduce medication costs
- Register at your preferred pharmacy
- Prefer single-month dispensing to manage timing and cashflow
1.4 Tax relief on medical expenses (20%)
- Track qualifying expenses throughout the year
- Keep receipts tidy (photo + folder works)
- You can claim back for up to 4 years (useful if you missed earlier)
